Want a certificate of your Spanish level? Take the DELE (Diploma de Español como Lengua Extranjera)!

There are several international exams to prove competency in English, one of the more popular being the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). In Spanish, there is really one main test to take: the Diploma de Español como Lengua Extranjera (DELE) initiated by the Cervantes Institute in Spain. The test is an internationally recognized confirmation of competency in the Spanish language.

Why take the DELE?

A strong grasp of Spanish is a clear benefit in the workplace. For a non-native speaker, proving your level of Spanish to a potential employer can be difficult. Having the exam on your resume is a great way to demonstrate your ability, and proves that you were willing to make the extra effort of taking the test.

The DELE is well-recognized in the Spanish-speaking world, and having passed the exam (particularly the Superior level) makes it much easier to work abroad in an all-Spanish environment.

DELE Structure

The exam has three different levels:

* Diploma de Español (Nivel inicial / Beginner level): This qualification attests to sufficient linguistic ability for understanding and responding appropriately in most normal day-to-day situations and for expressing desires and needs in a basic way.

* Diploma de Español (Nivel intermedio / Intermediate level): This qualification validates sufficient linguistic ability to get by in average day-to-day situations in normal communication circumstances, which do not require specialized use of the language.

* Diploma de Español (Nivel superior / Proficiency level): This qualification accredits the necessary linguistic competence to integrate in situations requiring an advanced use of the language and knowledge of the cultural customs embedded within it.

In each of the levels, there is a written, spoken, listening, and reading comprehension section in addition to a grammar portion. To take a practice test, refer to the Cervantes Institute former DELE exams.
