Vocabulary review

Class Goals:

A fun activity to review vocabulary (or almost anything) with students in an active manner.

Class Activities:
  1. Before class you write a bunch of things on the board. In this example you write every students name on the board.
  2. The class is divided into teams and each team is given a flyswatter. Each team gets in a row and one person from each team steps to the front of the class.
  3. The teacher asks a question like "Quién es pelirroja?" and then the students would run to the board and put their flyswatter on the name of the student with red hair.

With a smaller group or if students want to stay at their desks, give students a handout with vocabulary words you want to review. Explain words and students find them on the sheet. When students feel comfortable, they take turns explaining words.

For periodic review, give each student task of making review sheet for a specific set of vocabulary words, and coming up with explanations.

El Espinazo del Diablo: The Devil's Backbone (directed by Guillermo del Toro)

Title: El Espinazo del Diablo (The Devil's Backbone)
Released: 2001

Another great film produced by Guillermo del Toro, The Devil's Backbone is a film about superstition, fear and courage. The story takes place during the Spanish Civil War, which offers more of a backdrop than a focus to the film, conveying the sense of horror and darkness present at the time.

An unexploded bomb lands right outside of the Santa Lucia School, an orphanage for young boys who lost their parents during the war. The bomb provides the symbolic reminder of the growing pressure and mounting fear caused by the war: its presence is undeniable, yet nobody knows when it will finally explode.

The main story is about young Carlos, the most recent arrival to the Santa Lucia School, who discovers hidden secrets and is forced to deal with adult issues overnight.
