Nasrid Palace at the Alhambra

One of the most impressive things about visiting the Alhambra is the amazing plaster detail work, with elegant yet geometric shapes. This close up detail of a pattern shows just how complex the designs are, but in reality whole walls and rooms of the building are covered with panels like this.

The making of an Argentine hero: Martín Fierro

Title: Martín Fierro
Released: 2007

An animated version of José Hernández's epic poem Martín Fierro just hit theaters in Argentina, and perhaps elsewhere in the Spanish-speaking world. While the theater had a good showing of kids, the storyline was definitely for mature audiences, with themes of war, love, and betrayal throughout. The story goes something like this: Martín Fierro is forced to leave his idyllic life on his ranch, and promises his wife and kids he will return within 6 months when he is conscripted to join the revolutionary army and fight Indians on the northern border of Argentina. Life in the army is hard, and directly clashes with Martín Fierro's fierce gaucho independence. After a clash with the Indians, Fierro defects and goes back to his ranch where he hopes to find his family waiting and dreams of going back to the way things were. They, however, are not.

A Great Book About Spanish Culture - In the Garlic

Next time you're heading to Spain, pack In the Garlic next to your guidebook (or you can pick it up when you get there). I wished I had read the book at the beginning of my trip, as it would have explained so much of my confusion about Spanish culture, for example:

When I walk by people on the street in a small town and I say "hola", why are they saying "adios"?
We say hello, and they say goodbye. We're used to this now, but it remained weird for a long time. When walking down the street it's only natural to greet someone you know with "Hola". The Spanish, however, get right to the point and dispatch you with an "Adios".

Balancing out the earthiness with Malbec blends

The American palette loves a deep, dark, smooth, fruit-forward red wine. Although gaining in popularity in the US (mostly for their prices), many people feel that Argentine Malbecs can taste almost too woody, earthy, and sharp. The other night at our new favorite restaurant in Buenos Aires Sette Bacco, we found the solution to the sometimes tannin-heavy Malbec, with a tasty Malbec Cabernet blend from the Uxmal winery.

Antigua Corpus Cristi Festival - Flowers and Pine Boughs in Street Before Parade

It's not unusual to happen upon a religious ceremony when in Latin America, with its strong Catholic roots. We ended up in the middle of the annual Corpus Cristi festival in Antigua, Guatemala, and enjoyed watching neighbors decorating the streets with confetti, pine boughs, and flowers.
