Combining direct and indirect pronouns

Class Activities:

¿Cuándo usamos los pronombres indirectos: me/te/le/nos/les?
1. Con verbos como: comprar, dar, decir, escribir, enviar, mandar,
preguntar, regalar, traer para indicar dónde va el objeto directo (ej. Pedro me da flores.)
2. Verbos como gustar: importar, fascinar, dar miedo, dar asco, encantar, etc.

  • He buys her a coffee.
  • He wants to buy her a coffee.
  • We send them letters every week.
  • We need to send them letters every week.
  • I gave Sarah some flowers yesterday.
  • I wanted to give Sarah some flowers yesterday.
  • She always gives us homework.
  • She always thinks about giving us homework.

First go through the sentences replacing the indirect objects.

Le compra un cafe.
Él le quiere comprar un cafe. O Él quiere comprarle un cafe.

Establish the indirect object pronoun goes before the verb, or can follow an infinitive verb as in: Él quiere comprarle un cafe.

  • She has the ticket.
  • She wants to have the ticket.
  • We need the money.
  • He wants the new sweater.
  • I hate the song.

Then go through the above sentences replacing the direct objects.

Ella lo tiene o Lo tiene.
Ella lo quiere tener. O Ella quiere tenerlo.

Students will see the indirect and direct objects go in the same place.

When the two are combined...what happens? The indirect object pronoun comes first, before the conjugated verb:

Ella siempre nos la da.
Me lo van a mandar.

Whenever both the indirect and direct object pronouns start with L, the indirect object pronoun becomes "se" to make it easier to say.

ej. Ella da tarea a los estudiantes. Ella les la da --> Ella se la da.
