Dulce de Leche recipe

Starbuck's and Haagen Dazs have done their part to mass market what Latin Americans and some Europeans have been enjoying for years: dulce de leche. Literally "sweet of milk", dulce de leche is very similar to the look and taste of caramel. Dulce de leche can be: eaten by the spoonful, in the middle of cookies, in ice cream, a cake filling, a flan flavor, and my favorite way to start the day, spread on your breakfast toast.

The basic dulce de leche recipe calls for cooking whole milk and sugar over the stove for several hours until it darkens and caramelizes, but for an easier method, start with sweetened condensed milk. In a double boiler over medium heat, pour a can of sweetened condensed milk and stir occasionally for about 50 minutes, or until it caramelizes, becoming thicker and a golden brown. Another option is to open a can of sweetened condensed milk and cover it with foil. Put the can in a pan full of water so the can is mostly covered, and bake in the oven for 90-120 minutes at 425 degrees, until the sweetened condensed milk becomes golden brown. Here are some tasty recipes for dulce de leche mousse and cookies. ¡Buen provecho!

Denver Spanish House is a language and cultural center with the goal of sharing the Spanish-language and culture of Latin America and Spain in the Denver area.
