Missing

Title: Missing
Released: 1982

This 1982 American film is based on the true story of Charles Horman, an Amercan journalist/translator/artist who disappears when living in South America during the 1970s. Though the country is unspecified, various references point to Chile as the setting, where a military government has just overthrown the government and begins a reign of terror to find and silence subversives. After his military capture, the story is of Charles's wife Beth (played by Sissy Spacek) and his father Ed (played by Jack Lemmon) and their search for Charles. Ed arrives in South America with a trusting view, believing that the American Embassy and local government will help him find his son. As he and Beth dig deeper and deeper, Ed learns the truth about American involvement in the coup and realizes that his son may never be found. Although the acting is not the best and you may come away from the movie with worse Spanish than you started with, this film is definitely worth seeing as a personalized story of all too common desparecidos in Chile and Argentina during the 1970s.
