2nd Period Matrix- 10/14

Class Activities: 

-We reviewed basic directions from last class: right, left, forward, and back.
-Students learned two more directions: up and down, "arriba" and "abajo".
-We played "Simon Dice" (Simon Says) to practice with body parts, commands, and the directions we learned this week.
-Students learned how to ask for and give directions:
Turn left/right = "Gira a la izquierda/derecha"
Continue forward/backward = "Sigue adelante/de atrás"
Go up/down = "Va arriba/abajo"
-Students practiced by giving directions to different classrooms in the school.
-Students were given a worksheet for homework to practice with directions. It is due next class period (10/19). If they are on a trip next week, they should turn it in the next class they attend. See attachment for the worksheet.

Before School: Me Queda 3 (10/14)

Class Goals: 
Class Activities: 

-I talked to students individually about how they did on their oral quizzes.
-Students practiced writing out dollar amounts in Spanish. We practiced with dollars ("dólares"), euros, and pesos. To express cents, you use "centavos" for dollars, and "céntimos" for euros. If you missed class, practice with numbers at home by writing out in Spanish $7.25, €54.75, MEX$28.50, $30.15, €14.99, MEX$66.30, $22.88, €43.70, MEX$71.05 (see me if you have trouble or need help with this).
-Students learned a new conversational question to ask and answer. To ask someone where they're from, you say, "¿De dónde eres?". We practiced responding with, "Soy de Colorado" (I'm from Colorado) or "Soy de los estados unidos" (I'm from the United States).
-Students learned a useful phrase to use: "Habla despacio, por favor" (Speak slowly, please)
-Students reviewed how to express how something fits you. See past lessons for attachments.
-Students learned how to ask for another size if something doesn't fit you well. The word for size is "talla". We practiced asking, "¿Tienes otra talla?" (Do you have another size?)
-Students also learned how to ask for a particular article of clothing by saying "Quiero...por favor". Students worked with asking for clothing in different colors and sizes. If you don't already know them, please review colors and clothing vocabulary at home.
-Homework was given in class. It is due next class period (10/19). See attachment for the worksheet.

Cocina mexicana

Class Activities: 

Students defined following words we learned last week in our taste test:

We talked about the characteristics of Mexican food (which they had researched for homework). Introduced concept of aguas frescas, drinks typically made in Mexico featuring fresh fruits and vegetables, sometimes (often) sweetened with honey or sugar. Students were split into new groups and had a recipe and ingredients to make a different type of agua fresca. Students cleaned up and tasted their drinks.

Tarea: invent recipe for a salsa. Students chose what type of salsa they are going to make. One group chose tomato, another pineapple, mango, and peach. Using their key ingredient, students need to write out a list of ingredients for their recipe and the steps to make it. We are going to be making salsas next week.

3rd Period Matrix- 10/12

Class Goals: 

-Everyday in class, students practice conversational skills by responding to these questions: "¿Cómo estás?", "¿Cuántos años tienes?", and "¿Cómo te llamas?". Students will have an oral QUIZ on these questions next class period (Friday 10/14). They are expected to be able to answer all three questions in complete sentences. Students were given a study sheet for the quiz (see attachment).
-We learned directional commands:
Right = Derecha
Left = Izquierda
Forward = Adelante
Back = De atrás
-We practiced with these commands by learning how to dance salsa, one of the most popular dances throughout Latin countries.
-We played a game where the class had to lead a blindfolded student through an obstacle course by using Spanish directional commands.
-We also learned transportation vocabulary and discussed what type of transportation we would use to go to different locations. (see attachment)

-We went over students' mistakes on the time quiz. Overall, students did well on the quiz.
-We learned directional commands:

-We reviewed clothing vocabulary. Students should be studying this at home to be prepared for class activities.
-Students reviewed how to talk about how something fits you. See attachment in previous lesson.

Students received white boards and we practiced past tense verb conjugations using some of the words we've been working on this unit (nacer, empezar, conocer, ganar, entrar, encontrar). I gave them a sentence in English that they translated on the white board in Spanish.

As a group, we talked about what students learned about the group Calle 13 up for 10 Latin Grammy nominations this year. I introduced the next singer also up for some awards: Ricky Martin. Students read attached bio of Ricky Martin and answered true and false questions at the bottom.

Tarea: Finish reading RM bio and complete true/false questions. Listen to a song of RM (I recommend Tu Recuerdo since it features another important Latin Artist: Chambao.

Estudiantes reciben un resumen de varias empresas grandes en América Latina:

En grupos, tienen que presentar su compañía al grupo, explicando las partes más importante de la empresa

Tarea: investigar y presentar empresario de América Latina o España. También miran comerciales en la tele y llevar a la próxima clase 5 esloganes publicitarios.

Class Activities: 

Students received attached worksheet to describe the different flavors of the medialunas and dulce de leche they taste tested in class today.

Students tried all of the medialunas and dulce de leche and wrote notes. We talked a bit about Argentine culture while students ate and wrote.

Tarea: chau Argentina, hola México. Write a text about Mexican foods. On Thursday and next Tuesday we will be in the kitchen making a few Mexican dishes.
