To speak in the past using irregular pretérito.
There are two ways to speak in the past in Spanish
Pretérito

used with: completed event in the past that happened in a specific period
Imperfecto del pasado

used with: routine event in the past, time in past, an interrupted event, event without specific time frame
el pretérito is formed by:
dropping -ar and adding:
-é

-asteis
-aron
with -er y -ir verbs, dropping end and adding:
-í
-iste
-ió
-imos
-isteis
-ieron
There are many irregulars in the pretérito, mostly including common verbs we always use. SER is irregular and uses the same construction as IR in the past.

With groups of verbs sharing same type of irregular (written on cards with conjugation on back for those who don't have irregulars memorized), students ask each other questions using pretérito tú. Por ejemplo con verbos dar y ver: ¿Cuál es la última película que viste? y ¿A quién diste un regalo recientemente?
