Before School: La comida del mundo (1/18)

Class Activities: 

-Students practiced translating numbers and dollar amounts into Spanish. If you missed class, practice at home translating: 16, 9, 27, 35, $4.74, $1.99, $17.50
-Students practiced conversational skills with one another.
-We discussed expectations for this class. I reminded students that they are expected to participate, show effort, do the assignments in a timely manner, take responsibility, and communicate with me. If you are not sure if there is homework, you may check this website. If you miss class, you may check the website for the lesson and assignments, and talk to me about your absence.
-Students presented the dish they looked up for homework to the rest of the class.
-We will be going on our field trip to the Latin Supermarket tomorrow. We will meet in the Spanish room tomorrow at 11:00am. We will be back in time for lunch.
-Students have no homework.

We talked about important businesses and the products/services they provide:

We spent the remainder of class playing a review game to prepare for next Tuesday's test. We will continue the game on Thursday and have the remaining three groups present about their region.

We will have class on Thursday (despite break between 2nd and 3rd quarter Matrix).

Tarea: continue to study for test. Topics include:
* countries in South America and their capitals, flags, and a few important people (worksheet attached)
* where in South America you would find: mountains, Patagonia, important lakes and rivers, jungle, desert and salt flats.

1/13/12 Examen de cultura

Class Activities: 

Sorry for the late post!

Students took their test related to culture/festivals of the Spanish-speaking world. For those of you who weren't in class, please have your parents administer the test (attached). No notes during the test.

When students finished, we played some Loteria.

Tarea: no hay! We will have class on Wednesday and Friday this week despite the change from 2nd to 3rd quarter Matrix.

1/12/12 Naciones y nacionalidades: presentaciones

Class Activities: 

Sorry for a late post!

Students got their presentations ready to show and questions ready to hand out.

All but two groups presented their region while other students listened and prepared to answer questions posed by the presenters.

Tarea: we're going to have a test on our nations/nationalities unit 1/24. Students need to study what we've worked on during this unit for our review games next week. Topics are below. Students also need to print out their presentation (smallest version) so that I can correct them.

3rd Period Matrix- 1/13

Class Activities: 

-Students corrected one another's sentences that they wrote for the homework assignment. We reviewed the sentences in practice for the quiz next week.
-Students spent the rest of the class working on their Dali-inspired art. Their final draft should be finished in class on Wednesday.
-Students will have a quiz next class, Wed Jan 18. It will focus on present tense verbs that we have been practicing with in class. Be sure to study the verbs querer, ser, saber, and tener.
-Homework is to study for the quiz.

2nd Period Matrix- 1/13

Class Activities: 

-Students practiced conversational skills with one another.
-Students will have a quiz in class on Wednesday Jan 18. It will be an oral (spoken) quiz, so they will not need to write anything. I handed out instructions for the quiz (see attachment).
-We spent class practicing together for the quiz. We reviewed the activities vocabulary and asked one another if they like doing a particular activity.
-We also practiced with the school subjects vocabulary. Students asked one another which classes they have on their schedule. We took a survey of how many students in our class have each subject.
-Homework is to study for the quiz.

Class Activities: 

-Students answered questions on the reading about typical Mexican dishes. We discussed the answers together as a class.
-Students practiced conversational skills with one another.
-I handed out a reading on typical Spanish dishes. Students read together in partners and answered questions on the reading (see attachment).
-I informed the students that we will be taking a field trip next week to Avanza, the Latin supermarket nearby. We are going on Thursday Jan 19. We will leave around 11am and be back in time for lunch. Students will have a scavenger hunt to complete while in the store, and we will also pick up food to eat together when we get back to school. I will have more details in class next Wednesday.
-Students have homework due on Wednesday (see attachment)

3rd Period Matrix- 1/11

Class Activities: 

-Students practiced conversational skills with one another. We went over a new conversational questions, “Donde vives?” (Where do you live?). The response is “Vivo en...” (I live in...).
-We reviewed the Most Common Verbs sheet of present tense conjugations. We practiced sentences beginning with “Yo” (I). We also practiced choosing the correct conjugation out of two options (Ella quiero/quiere la pizza). Then, students practiced creating their own sentences with the verbs querer, tener, and ser.
-Students will be having a quiz on these verbs next Wednesday in class. We will discuss the verbs a bit more in class on Friday, but they should also be looking over these at home.
-For homework, students should create one sentence for each verb: querer, tener, and ser (3 sentences total). They must read them aloud to a parent/guardian and have them sign their sheet. This is due on Friday, 1/13.
