Repaso: números, pronombres, artículos

Class Activities:

There were five numbers written in Spanish on the board that students had to identify.
1. Ciento noventa y nueve.
2. Dos mil doce.
3. Quinientos treinta y ocho.
4. Setecientos setenta y uno.
5. Mil novecientos noventa y tres.

We went over the numbers as a group and generally reviewed numbers (starting by tens from 20 and then by hundreds to a thousand).

One student was awarded a prize for completing the largest number of do now activities. The person with the most do now activities from now to the end of the year will get a prize our last class. We spent a few minutes organizing our folders.

We are going to spend several classes reviewing concepts that students have learned in the past. Students took notes. Review included:
* masculine/feminine articles, rules for words that are masculine/feminine
* possessive pronouns
* personal pronouns

Tarea: study what we reviewed today: numbers, rules for masc/feminine articles, possessive pronouns, personal pronouns.

Historias: verbos irregulares y refranes 2/28/12

Class Activities:

Students completed two pages of a "quiz" about preterite/imperfect conjugations. We went over answers as a class.

There are several common irregular verbs in the preterite that students need to know. Here are the irregular preterite conjugations. We focused on: tener, poder, poner, venir, ser, estar, decir.

We learned several refranes/dichos (sayings) en español:
* Aunque la mona se vista de seda, mona queda.
* Dime con quién andas y te diré quien eres.
* El ave temprano atrapa el lombriz.

Here are several Spanish sayings and their translations.

Tarea: students are to memorize irregular preterite conjugations (above) and chose a partner and refran/dicho that they want to write a story about. We will be writing the story on Thursday so they just need to identify the refrain.

Comprensión auditiva: animales

Class Activities:

How to be a good communicator: ESL

Class Activities:

Talk about what it means to be a good communicator.

What are specific things a person can do to be a good communicator?
* speak loud enough for the person to hear
* speak clearly (getting rid of mumbling and filler words -- like, you know, you know what I'm saying, um).
* be concise. The more someone speaks the less others listen.
* speak at a good pace. If a person speaks quickly using filler words, their message is much less clear and effective than someone speaking slowly, choosing their words carefully and not using filler words.

Students each get a task that they have to explain to the group how to do using the above communication recommendations. Use words like, first, then, next, finally.

  • How to plan a vacation
  • How to make coffee
  • How to make a paper airplane
  • How to send an email
  • How to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich
  • How to parallel park
  • How to cook your favorite dish
  • How to get to work from your house
