We are going to be studying the 100 most common verbs to increase student vocabulary. We went over the definitions and students should start learning any of these verbs they don't already know.

We went over some vocabulary used in a restaurant setting:
* mesero
* la carta
* el menú del día
* la cuenta
* pedir = ordenar
* quisiera
* tenedor + cuchillo + cuchara + servilleta = cubierto
* propina

In groups of 3, students practiced a conversation in a restaurant. We are currently practicing conversations in different settings so that students can practice and become more comfortable speaking in everyday situations.

Students were each assigned a topic that we've studied to some extent in the past but students need some review. Each student must teach a mini-lesson (5 minutes or less) and then plan an activity to practice their concept. Students will be teachers starting on Thursday and for the next several classes. For example, if a student were assigned "body parts" for their topic, they might draw a body on the board and call on students to share vocabulary until all the body parts are written on the board. The activity could be a game like Simon Says so that students get practice with what they've just learned.

Tarea: prepare mini-lesson and activity to practice concept. Students will be teaching starting Thursday. If your student has a tough topic and needs some help, they can talk to me before or after class tomorrow.

Explorando América Latina: comida (3/21/12)

Class Activities:

Students matched up the following cooking verbs:

Cocinar to bake
preparar to open
cortar to cook
abrir to put
poner tu cut
mezclar to prepare
hornear to mix

Students were given back their test that we took last week. The test seemed to be tough for most students. We went over vocabulary that students were missing. Their homework is to correct mistakes using their notes.

Students have been paired up in groups and have chosen a country that they will spend the majority of the next quarter studying. Our first theme is food, and students brought in a dish/drink/desert from their country they would like to make. We went to the computer lab and students filled out the attached worksheet sharing information they learned about typical food from their country.

Tarea: complete food worksheet (if they didn't in class) and correct test.

Conversaciones

Class Activities:

Students wrote the name of the student next to the description based on student presentations about their life when they were kids (attached). We went over answers as a class.

As a group, we came up with typical things to ask a person in an introductory conversation.

Students formed two circles, one interior facing out and the other exterior facing in. Students had a basic conversation with their first partner closed the conversation with nice to meet you and then moved on to the next student. Students conversed with 5 other students.

Tarea: correct tests. Students were given their test back and need to make corrections to hand in the first day after spring break.

Examen de repaso (3/16/12)

Class Activities:

Students arrived and took their text on various review topics we've been working on the last few weeks. Test is attached.

With the remaining time in class, we started our new unit. Students were paired up and will be studying a Spanish-speaking country in depth for the majority of the remaining classes we have. We made a list of all of the Spanish-speaking countries. In their pairs, students had 15 minutes to decide what country they want to study and had to write a brief text starting with: Queremos estudiar (este país) porque.... They were then to come up with a list of aspects of the country they are interested in studying (holidays and celebrations, food, music, etc.)

Tarea: bring in a recipe of a dish specific to the country they will be studying. The recipe needs a list of ingredients and can take no longer than 30 minutes. After spring break we will be preparing dish in class.
