Explorando América latina: gente famosa (4/13)

Class Activities:

For the first activity, students had to find out what country each group is studying and one interesting thing they've learned so far about their country.

Famous Latin Americans

We talked about what famous people students know who are from Latin America. They knew several musicians we had studied in our music unit (or listened to independently), presidents of the countries they are studying, and sports figures including futbolista Lionel Messi.

Students were given attached worksheet with photos of several famous Latin Americans. We went to the computer lab and working in their pairs, students were to figure out who people are, their nationalities, and for what reason they are famous. All people on the list are from countries students are studying (Argentina, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras). Argentines may be slightly overrepresented;)

Tarea: complete famous people worksheet.

Conversaciones: familia y profesiones (4/17)

Class Activities:

Students were paired up for information activity. Each student had family tree that they needed their partner to replicate by asking questions about the family:

¿Tienes abuelos?
¿Tienes hermanos?
¿Tu tío está casado?

Students had to write down the names, ages and professions of all members of other person's family tree.
Professions included:
* abogado
* ama de casa
* ingeniero
* médico
* enfermero
* policía
* economista

Students each chose a profession and did a short role play using other students as their clients.

Tarea: students received a reading comprehension exercise to practice vocabulary around professions. They need to read the front page and match descriptions on the back.

3rd Period Matrix- 4/13

Class Activities:

-Students reviewed the difference between preterite and imperfect past tense verbs.
-We went over homework answers together.
-Students learned another way imperfect is used in the past. It can be used to describe a scene in the past, such as “I was sitting in the chair”. However, it can also be used to express something that you used to do. So to say, I used to play basketball, you would say “Yo jugaba baloncesto.”
-We went over the irregular verbs in imperfect tense.
-Students continued to conjugate imperfect verbs on their verb sheets.
-For homework, students must write 5 sentences that each begin with “Cuando era nino/nina...” (When I was a young boy/girl...) to tell something that they used to do in the past. It is due next class, Wed 4/18.

3rd Period Matrix- 4/11

Class Activities:

-Students practiced completing sentences with preterite past tense verbs.
-Students learned a new way to express past tense verbs: imperfect tense. We discussed the difference between these verbs. In simple terms, preterite is used to speak about a specific point in time (He walked through the door). Imperfect is used to paint a picture of an ongoing action in the past (She was sitting in the chair). We will talk more about these types of past tense verbs in class.
-Students were handed out explanation sheets on how to conjugate imperfect tense. In partners, students began conjugating verbs in imperfect tense (see attachment).
-We read a story that included many preterite and imperfect verbs.
-Students have a worksheet for homework that is due Friday 4/13 (see attachment).

Explorando América latina: la música

Class Activities:

Students arrived and competed attached information about the food students made on Friday. We went over it as a class.

Students will now explore information about music from their country. They were given a list of questions (attached) having to do with music that they needed to answer while researching in the computer lab.

Tarea: Create a rough draft of a page that will go in their book about their country about music. Students can adapt the questions they answered in class to create text educating their readers about music from their country. Several students will be on trips next week, so those students need to hand in their music page rough draft and their general information rough draft (including but not limited to their country's flag, president, and map with important cities and/or regions). Since students are working in pairs, they need to coordinate with their partner about who will do what.
