Learning Spanish Beyond the Classroom

Surrounded by Spanish

The best way to learn a language is to immerse yourself in it. Whether that means living abroad, traveling, or taking advantage of exposure to Spanish in Denver, you will learn to speak and understand Spanish faster than studying in the classroom once a week. The classroom will give you the structure you need to create and build on a foundation, upon which you can explore the language and culture in its authentic setting.

I recommend music, films, television, radio, learning cds, media, and internet resources to keep you improving your Spanish outside of class. Most importantly, I recommend you speak with native speakers of Spanish whenever you get the chance. They will appreciate your effort and you'll get great practice!

Group Classes: Things to Know Before Class

What You Need For Class

A notebook and handouts will be provided by the Denver Spanish House, so the only resource you should have for home study is a Spanish dictionary. I recommend either a bilingual dictionary, a picture dictionary or a learner dictionary (such as the Dictionary Práctico del Estudiante).

What to Expect in Class

Classes will be small, between 5-10 students, and will focus on practicing conversations you will have in the real world. Classes will take place in an immersion setting so that you will start thinking and operating in Spanish as soon as possible. We are believers in learning and practicing Spanish outside of the classroom to learn more quickly.

Abre Los Ojos

Title: Abre los ojos (Open Your Eyes)
Released: 1997

Plot Summary

This surreal Spanish film written and directed by Alejandro Amenábar stars Penélope Cruz and Eduardo Noriega, and provides the storyline for the American version of the film - Vanilla Sky.

Cesár (Noriega) is young, good-looking, and notorious for being a playboy. He meets Sofia (Cruz), and sees something in her that makes him want to pursue a more real relationship with her. Shortly after meeting, Cesár is in an accident that leaves his face disfigured which irreparably changes his life.

The story floats between fantasy and reality, thriller and drama, and Amenábar somehow manages to pull it all together in a wonderfully made film.

Juanes: Pop Music from Colombia

Much like crossover Colombian pop singer Shakira, Juanes is a Colombian pop and rock singer whose Spanish-language music is enjoyed around the world. His four albums include hits such as La camisa negra, Gotas de agua dulce, A Dios le pido and Fotografía. He has received multiple Latin Grammy Awards and performs his music with other great musicians like Nelly Furtado, Andrés Calamaro and the Black Eyed Peas.

He is also a huge philanthropist and started a foundation to help remove land mines.

Some of his music is heavily influenced by hard rock, but my favorites are his pop songs, like this from most recent album La Vida es un Ratico.
