Latinos famosos: 10/17/12

Class Activities:

Students arrived and worked in pairs describing members of class for their partner to guess. Students practiced: le gusta, vive en, es, tiene, and other basic present tense verbs.

We played 20 questions with the living famous Spanish-speakers students have studied so far. A student came to the front of the class and asked yes or no questions to find out their person. Ej. ¿Es hombre o mujer? ¿Nació en Argentina? ¿Vive en España?

Students were paired up and were to write a dialogue between an interviewer and one of the famous Spanish-speakers (vivo o muerto) that the other student had studied. The interviewer asked questions of the famous person.

Latinos famosos: 10/10/12

Class Activities:

Students arrived and read an article about Celia Cruz. They were supposed to read for a general idea of what the article is about and then needed to underline 10 past tense verbs.

Students shared something they learned about Celia Cruz: where/when she was born, what she did, when she died, etc. We also made a list of past tense verbs and I wrote them on the board in three columns. The columns were -ar verbs, -er/ir verbs and irregular verbs. We went over the conjugation to talk about third person in the past.

-ar verbs: drop ending (ar) and add -o (participó, empezó)
-er/ir verbs: drop ending (er, ir) and add -ió (corrió, vivió)

We made a list of some famous Spanish speakers who are no longer living. Students each chose a person and we went to the computer lab where they could learn 5 things about their famous people. Sentences should be simple and include the correct conjugation of verbs in the past.

Tarea: complete 5 sentences about their person.

Students arrived and conjugated 10 verbs on board.

We did a quick practice with small whiteboards practicing verb conjugations.

Students who hadn't presented their famous Spanish-speaker presented while other students took notes.

We played a game called Lotería (bingo) and I explained to students that we are going to make our own lotería game using famous Spanish-speakers.

Tarea: each student got a 3x5 index card and needed to put a photo on one side of the person who they studied and a corrected version of the information they wrote about the person on the other side. Students got the corrected version of their information back in class today. We're going to use these cards to create our Lotería game.
