Latinos famosos: 10/31/12

Class Activities:

Students answered questions below and we went over them as a class:

  1. ¿Cómo se llama la presidenta de Argentina?
  2. ¿Cómo se llama el revolucionario argentino que participó en el golpe militar en Cuba?
  3. ¿De dónde es Lionel Messi?
  4. ¿Cómo se llama el esposo de Frida Kahlo?
  5. ¿Cuál es la nacionalidad de Pablo Neruda?
  6. ¿Cuál es la profesión de Carlos Gardel?
  7. ¿Cómo se llama una pintura bien famosa Pablo Picasso?

The last few students presented their famous Latin Americans/Spaniards and we played Lotería using the famous people students have studied and presented.

With the names of all the famous people we have learned about, students played a game where they competed in teams to get their partner to guess the person they were describing.

Tarea: On Friday we will be celebrating the Day of the Dead, so students need to write short text in Spanish explaining what the celebration is, where it is celebrated, and what they know about the holiday.

La comida: 10/30/12

Class Activities:

Warm up: Students wrote for 5 minutes about the differences between Day of the Dead (coming up this Thursday and Friday) and Halloween and what parts of each celebration they like. Students shared their observations with the class.

We went over student homework and made sure students understood questions and vocabulary. This reading comprehension activity is from the Diploma de español como lengua extranjera (DELE) and the level of this particular assignment is B1. One goal of ours this year is for students to take an entire A2 or B1 escolar test and pass. Model tests are found at the DELE website.

Students made a big mind map using vocabulary around individual foods by category: postres, verduras, frutas, carbohidratos, bebidas, carne, productos lacteos.

Tarea: write short text describing Argentine food (for our Friday field trip). Include common foods and how Argentine fare is different than other South American countries.

Students worked in pairs for a quick communcation activity.

In pairs, students had a 5 minute conversation about food: what foods they like/don't like, favorite restaurants and what they typically eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Students presented the vocabulary they came up with last class (en la clase/en el restaurante). Students took notes on any vocabulary they didn't know.

Latinos famosos: 10/24/12

Class Activities:

Students spent 5 minutes writing a biography/info sheet about one of their friends to practice past tense, present tense and describing people. A few students shared what they had written.

As a random vocabulary review, we reviewed some vocabulary around time (months, days of week, seasons, dates).

Students who hadn't presented their Spanish-speaker who is no longer living shared what they learned while other students took notes.

We will not have class on Friday since we are between 1st and 2nd quarters of Matrix and there are no Matrix classes for the rest of the week. I will call parents to remind them.

Tarea: students took attached worksheet and need to identify the name, nationality and profession for each person. These are all famous Latin American and Spaniards who students have studied and presented about. The only person on this sheet who hasn't been presented to the class is Nestor Kirchner. Can you figure out which one he is?

La comida: 10/23

Class Activities:

Students quizzed each other on personal dictionaries.

We had a visitor from Colombia to class today (Karina) who most students worked with last year when she subtituted for me. Karina is going to substitute for my classes while I'm out on maternity leave (roughly Thanksgiving through after holiday break).

To wrap up our Lucha Libre unit, students took turns explaining various aspects of Lucha Libre to Karina. They talked about the history, what it is, famous luchadores, and general tenents of the sport. Students then went around and talked about the luchador they had invented.

We are starting a new unit related to food today, and will be going to lunch on November 2nd at a latin-themed restaurant. I will be contacting parents to confirm our lunch out. Students worked in pairs and wrote down vocabulary related to the topic they were assigned (en la cocina, en el restaurante).

Tarea: students need to sit down for 10 minutes and write down every food they know, ideally categorizing them by type (postres, verduras, bebidas).
